Embroidery puckering is the rippling or gathering of fabric around the stitches. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Turning the tension dial immediately can hide the original problem or add another one. Begin with the fabric, backing, and hooping, then inspect the thread path and design. Change one thing at a time on a representative sample.
This checklist is for home machine embroidery. It does not prescribe a universal tension number, stabilizer weight, needle size, or hoop tightness. The correct setup depends on the machine, fabric, thread, and design. Stop if the needle strikes a part, the machine jams, or you hear unusual mechanical noise; those conditions need a different response from mild fabric rippling.
First identify what you are seeing
Remove a completed test from the hoop before judging it. Note whether the ripples were visible during stitching, appeared after release, or developed after the item's permitted washing and drying process. Record where they occur: around the entire design, beside one dense area, or along a particular fabric direction. These observations guide your next test without proving the cause.
Separate puckering from other defects. A temporary hoop impression is different from fabric gathered into stitched ridges. An outline that misses its fill may involve movement or design behavior. Loops or a nest of thread underneath call for checking threading and the bobbin area. Several symptoms can occur together, so photograph both sides before changing the setup.
Do not press the sample flat and declare the problem solved. If pressing is allowed for the fabric and thread, it can be part of the normal finish, but evaluate the item again after that finish. Your goal is a result that remains acceptable in intended use. Keep the unpressed photograph so you can compare the next trial honestly.
Reset the test so comparisons mean something
Choose a scrap of the same fabric as the planned project, with enough material to mount properly. Use the intended design at its supplied size, or a known suitable sample when testing the machine separately. Write down the backing, thread, needle, hoop, and settings. A note that says “same as last time” becomes unreliable as soon as you change a spool.
For each trial, state one question. You might ask whether a different backing improves support, or whether relaxed hooping removes the ripples. Keep the other variables unchanged where possible. If you replace the needle, change the thread, add backing, and adjust tension together, a better result will not tell you which change mattered.
Brother's multi-model troubleshooting page lists incorrect threading, damaged needles, unsuitable fabric/thread/needle combinations, wrong stabilizer, and stretched or loose hooping among possible causes.[5] That broad list explains why puckering needs an ordered investigation. The page also includes ordinary sewing problems; do not copy its feed-dog or stitch-length advice into embroidery mode without checking your own manual.
Step one: inspect the fabric without stretching it
Lay an unhooped scrap flat and compare it with the embroidered sample. Check whether you pulled the fabric out of its natural shape during mounting. BERNINA's hooping guide specifically warns that pulling only the fabric can distort it.[2] Aim for a secure, smooth setup, not the greatest tightness your hands can produce.
Consider whether your preparation matches the finished item's care instructions. If the project will be washed, evaluate a test through that permitted care process before committing to a batch. Do not wash a material that requires another care method just to follow a generic embroidery tip. Record the preparation so your successful test can be repeated on the final blank.
Look at the design's placement relative to seams, hems, and bulky construction. If these prevent the hoop from holding the intended area evenly, change the mounting plan rather than tightening harder. A flat scrap may work while a finished garment does not. That difference is useful evidence that access or mounting deserves attention.

Step two: confirm the stabilizer matches the project
Backing supports embroidery stitches; it should be selected for the fabric and design, not simply because it is the roll already beside the machine.[2] Read the stabilizer manufacturer's instructions for application and removal. Also check the design instructions. A recommendation made for a stable woven towel does not automatically apply to a stretchy shirt.

Check that the backing is actually secured in the mounting method. A suitable material cannot do its intended job if it shifts independently from the fabric. BERNINA describes temporary adhesive and adhesive-backed stabilizers as ways to hold difficult projects, sometimes with a basting box.[3] Follow the adhesive's instructions and keep spray away from the machine; do not treat every adhesive as embroidery-safe.
Adding layers is not a universal cure. It changes the whole stack and its finished feel. If you test another layer, record that as the single change and inspect the result after removing excess backing as directed. Do not judge success only while the material is still locked flat in the hoop.
Step three: re-hoop rather than tugging at a mounted project
Use the hooping procedure for your actual hoop. BERNINA's guide describes loosening the outer ring enough for the fabric and backing, aligning the template, and tightening after the layers are positioned.[2] Those instructions illustrate deliberate setup; they are not a reason to force a screw-based procedure onto a magnetic or other specialty frame.
If the fabric becomes distorted, release it and start over. Repeatedly pulling one edge of a mounted shirt can make the setup look smooth while changing its shape. Check the grain or a visible knit line against the unhooped scrap. Keep both the backing and fabric under control rather than correcting only the surface.
Also inspect what is outside the hoop. A towel hanging over a table edge or a garment caught against the machine may obstruct free movement. Arrange the project according to your machine's instructions and use its documented placement check. Keep fingers clear while the hoop moves. Do not hold or steer the fabric during embroidery to compensate for a poor setup.
Step four: check threading and needle condition
Before changing tension, rethread through the full documented path and reinstall the bobbin according to the manual. Check the spool setup and any required cap. Brother includes threading and spool-cap problems among its troubleshooting causes.[5] A missed guide is not corrected by selecting a different tension number.
Inspect the needle and replace a damaged, bent, or suspect needle with a type and size appropriate for the machine and project. Brother directs users to their manual for the fabric, thread, and needle combination.[5] Do not take a needle recommendation from an unrelated denim sewing example and apply it to fine embroidery on a knit shirt.
If there is tangled thread or lint, stop and follow the permitted cleaning procedure. Switch off and unplug before cleaning as instructed for the relevant machine. Brother's race-cleaning article warns against using a scratched bobbin case and emphasizes correct installation.[4] Do not scrape a damaged case smooth or reach into inaccessible parts as a puckering remedy.

Step five: consider the design, especially after resizing
Check whether the file was prepared for the fabric and size you are using. Did the supplied design sew poorly, or only your enlarged, reduced, or combined version? Return to an untouched original when possible. That comparison separates a design-editing question from the setup you are trying to diagnose.
Brother warns that overly fine stitch density and overlapping stitches in outside embroidery data can cause thread or needle breakage.[1] That warning does not prove density caused your puckers, but it is a reason to stop treating every file as equally suitable. Ask the digitizer about the intended fabric and size instead of compensating indefinitely with more backing or altered tension.
Run a known suitable simple design on a comparable sample. If it behaves well but the problem file does not, provide the design seller with photos, fabric details, supplied size, and any edits. If several suitable files fail in the same way, revisit mounting and machine setup. These comparisons narrow the investigation; they are not a substitute for service diagnosis.
Adjust tension only through the model's procedure
There is no numerical tension setting that this guide can guarantee across machines, threads, and fabrics. Start from the documented embroidery setting or the last known appropriate setup. If the manual calls for a tension test, use that test and its criteria. Record the starting point and each permitted adjustment so you can return to it.
Do not turn a bobbin-case screw just because an online picture resembles your sample. Some adjustments or cases have special instructions, and a general puckering checklist cannot establish that they apply. If the manual does not authorize the adjustment, ask the manufacturer or a qualified service provider rather than experimenting inside the machine.
Know when to stop testing
Stop after a needle strike, recurring jam, damaged bobbin case, or unexplained mechanical noise. If proper threading, suitable materials, careful mounting, and a known suitable design still fail, seek model-specific support. Brother's broad troubleshooting page advises service when the issue persists after its applicable checks.[5] Send your recorded setup and sample photographs with the request.
Keep successful and failed samples together. Label the one variable changed and judge each sample after release and normal finishing. That small record is more useful than a collection of universal settings. It tells you which combination worked on your fabric, and what to repeat when you embroider the final item.
