Start with the design size, not the machine
Almost every regretted first purchase comes from the same mistake: choosing a machine before knowing how big the designs will be. The embroidery field is a hard physical limit. A 100 × 100 mm machine cannot stitch a 130 mm design in one pass, no matter which software or hoop is used. Decide your typical design size first, then shortlist the machines that clear it.
Measure the largest design you realistically want
Take the biggest project you expect to attempt in the next year — a left-chest logo, a hooped quilt block, a jacket back — and measure it in millimetres. Left-chest logos usually sit between 70 and 100 mm wide. Towel borders and tote panels often need 130 to 180 mm. Jacket backs start around 240 mm and climb quickly.
Square fields and rectangular fields behave differently
A 200 × 200 mm square field and a 130 × 180 mm rectangular field are not interchangeable. A tall, narrow monogram fits the rectangle comfortably; a wide circular crest may not. Compare your design's longest side against the matching side of the field, not against the field's total area.
Dedicated embroidery or a combination machine
This is the second real decision, and it is mostly about your workflow rather than your budget.
When a dedicated embroidery machine makes sense
If you already own a sewing machine you like, a dedicated embroidery machine keeps both jobs running in parallel. You can leave a design stitching while you cut and assemble on the other machine. Dedicated models in this comparison also tend to offer a larger field for the money, because none of the mechanism is spent on ordinary sewing.
When a combination machine makes sense
If you have one table, one power outlet and no sewing machine yet, a combination model removes the second purchase entirely. The trade-off is sequential work: while the machine embroiders, it is not available for seams. For occasional projects that is rarely a problem.
What actually slows beginners down
File transfer
Every machine in this comparison accepts designs, but not through the same route. USB stick transfer is the most universal and the least dependent on a computer's operating system. Wireless transfer is more convenient day to day and removes the stick entirely, though it ties you to the manufacturer's app.
Hoops, stabiliser and thread
The included hoop defines your working size out of the box, and buying a larger hoop later does not enlarge the machine's field. Stabiliser choice causes more first-project failures than any machine specification: a design that puckers is usually under-stabilised, not under-powered.
